What people said about Kinect?

K.Grant (United Kingdom)

As other reviewers have said: I’m not sure how many houses UK measure the ideal distance for Kinect. I have the second largest bedroom (in a detached house) as a “game room / lounge. It is 8ft long, but it has a sofa in one hand and the telly the other end. So really, I am, or just under, 6 m away from the sensor.

I set the Kinect (piece of cake – the seizure of power [they need their strength BTW so keep in mind] and plug it back USB adapter – Wireless users must enter at the front with the cable budget, but I use Ethernet so I can not comment much on that) and ran through the initial setup wizard (you must be online for a few small updates to the software). At first it seemed to have no problems whatsoever, and I had some fun with the game bundled and quickly began to see how this could seriously take off.

First impressions: wow! Tech really awesome! Yes, it works! Wave your hands in the dashboard (where you see a small hand in the bottom right and / or a little ‘microphone to indicate hand gestures / speech recognition is available, respectively) to draw attention Kinect and you get a’ Wii like ‘pointer as it moves around the screen to select things: keep your hand in the same position when on the icon of the application until the full circle, and will be selected. Easy! And I kinda feel like I’m in ‘Minority Report’, which is kind of cool. It seems fairly taking up all your movements, and this in fact go far beyond the Wii (which I fully agree with another reviewer here, as mine is really gathering dust for some time and was, in fact I sell it now I think the XBOX is really all hours, and much, much better!).

However, once you realize that the point of “departure” of the “playground” – standing – and his legs against the sofa and then play (or the development of calibration) requests to “step back” there you realize you have a problem!

I should have known! I should. When I saw the online advertising and vids little alarm bell began to ring when I noticed something large and spacious studio type minimialist case study seemed to have these people! 50 “tele wall-mounted and are standing about 15 feet away! Hmmm.” Nice to have the space, “I thought at the time … Oh dear, those alarm bells would have to play much harder, maybe I was temporarily stunned by the sight of shiny new technologies.

The 6ft ‘Manual’ states away from the sensor (1 player) and 8ft for two players. However, I would say that this is absolutely minimal, even for a player!

The reason is that I just run the calibration tool in Kinect menu (which appears to be deeper than ‘Wizard’ initial configuration) and the problems become more evident. We can not acknowledge my head until I move my couch to touch the radiator (bit of a problem as it is a model of chair that now sit! It also does not like to be moved much because of the reclining mech bits! So not something I want to move all day.) and then really push your legs against the sofa. Now, at this point, I would say that they are almost certainly about 6 feet away! However, you get a cardboard with a face on it that must be taken up and Kinect tells you to align your eyes on your card into a glass screen (weird I know, but when you run through it you can see how you can help calibrate) to obtain the large span. The trouble is – it keeps asking to go back, and back. At this point, of course, I’m climbing back on the sofa to meet with his instructions.

Although I have moved my xbox down the hall I would like better (like a lot of people I imagine), we have television and sofa “width-wise,” rather than the length as it makes more space available.

Long story short (too late) I agree with another reviewer here that not many houses in the UK would find it difficult to meet the bare minimum here! Seriously, you are talking of a very large room with no obstacles in front of you and a few meters behind you. If you’re buying this for your kid who has his Xbox in the bedroom, I would seriously first-hand how far I can not imagine many people have a bedroom big enough.

MS of course argue that Kinect want to be a family game, and then is designed for use lounge. The problem is that I would argue that the average American living room must of course be larger than our ‘poor UK’ houses! : (

However, you have the space: How?

Well, first impressions: very, very, very good. People over 35 will probably think it’s worth 120 notes just to be able to talk to your Xbox console just like they used to communicate with the computer in Star Trek! I am one of those people and say (in a voice perfectly normal! Do not need more than statement here!) “XBOX Pause” or “XBOX REWIND …. faster … faster … play!” will never, ever get old for me! :) That works out more background noise than the sound of the film itself is very impressive indeed (not ‘training’ required for speech recognition by the way!).

The sensor / camera (s) are equally impressive. As someone who plays too many games sitting, I feel you lose weight serious playing these games! You really have to jump, wave, kick and move around the room with taste (depending on the game of course). It seems to detect the movements to perfection. Again, if you’re old skool and have experienced things like “pen light” on the ZX Spectrum in the past, et cetera. then, like me, you probably have come to expect these things to be flakey, misleading and a bit ‘naff at best. I’m happy to say that I was wrong! The technology (so far) seems to work almost perfectly. Nice to see something really innovative to get out of MS R & D!

The voice recognition works only on a few items (you can not move between the elements of the entire dashboard, for example. It only really works in “Kinect Hub and Zune). It works best in Zune (playing back movies or music). One thing I have not seen mentioned in the suggestions / manual is that you can chain the commands at the same time. For example, I said “XBOX” and then waiting for the menu to come up with the available commands and then say “pause,” it quickly realize that you can say “XBOX PAUSE” immediately and instantly breaks etc. Very impressive (!).

Anyway: would I recommend? If you like the idea of games like Wii (and perhaps those most affected in the future?), Which uses the whole body and / or want to control your media player with voice recognition, then absolutely yes, it’s worth every penny.

I failed to preorder kinect and by luck, Amazon had it in stock so I ordered it Thurs 11th Nov. it arrived next day and it has been great fun. Easy to set up, the Adventure game comes with various games for you to get into.
Some people have had issues with space to play, if you want to play 2 players, you will need a clutter free open room.
It is so easy to play, there is a slight delay in your avatars reaction, but after a few minutes you can adjust your playing to compensate. I look forward to getting different games in the future, this is the future of gaming. Now in the future, if they can use Kinect with big titles like Call of Duty and other big titles, it will be awesome.

Marmite

It seems that you love or hate this piece of equipment. Personally I love it! just had a couple of hours then you get warped up X’ Mas. I’m use it on the old model and the Xbox Elite. played the adventure game that came with it and its pretty good.

Over priced! No – because if we think of as a second controller and battery pack and charger decent ect ……
and this is something new.it relay is the most advanced eye of a toy! picture is clear for a start. have no problem with light in the room. and is motorised so can folow you and positon its self.

This is mostly a duplicate of my revised review Kinect Bundle Xbox 360 …

Kinect I only found out a couple of weeks ago. After reading some of the prior reviews, I was intrigued enough that I pre-ordered almost immediately. Since first discovering this regard, as I read many reviews that I had time to read. Unfortunately, the more I read, the more suspicious I got my pre-order. Most of the reviews complained about delays, or space requirement, or that the games were nothing more than regurgitated Wii games, and like any game title ever developed has not been re-developed for Kinect on launch day. WTF?

Setting Kinect was a breeze. Plug and play. A couple of setup items and you’re ready to go.

We moved the table out of the way and moved the couch back a couple of feet to get the distance of 6-8 feet recommended in the documentation. But I do not think you need much space, honestly. For some of the games, we were as close as 3-4 feet from Kinect and it worked fine. I think the “problem” space is a non-issue.

We played Adventures Kinect first, the game comes in the package. Wii-like? Yes Fun? Soooooo much more fun than any other Wii game I’ve played. Kinect that can track your every move – your hands, head, arms, feet, hips, everything – is just fantastic. No controller can detect if you are moving from side to side or up and down, or squatting or jumping at the same time moving his arms and feet. It ‘s just brilliant as well Kinect works.

One game in particular really shows the potential of this thing. You’re in a bathtub under the water and fish crazy keep poking holes in the glass. You must fill these holes to keep the water from coming in. In some cases I had to use both hands, feet and head to plug all the holes … yes, all at the same time. The girl and I had a blast with it. The other games were just as fun.

I think your best form highlighted Kinect everybody. She is a replica of yourself on the infrared screen. The precise shape of my body was (unfortunately) and resumed the logo on the shirt I wore. There are numerous exercises you can do and follow along with an instructor. You have to stay in sync with the intructor to earn points and move to higher levels and Kinect does an incredible job of following your every movement and comparing it with the instructor. Do not spread your feet far enough away? And I’ll tell you. Do not hold the right pace? And I’ll tell you. It ‘much more engaging than anything I’ve played on the Wii and now I can really see me do Your Shape, instead of going to the gym. It ‘really great.

A lot of reviewers complained about delay, that it takes a while ‘for Kinect to detect the movements and get them on the screen. Is there lag? Yes, measured in fractions of a second. It ‘obvious? Only if you’re focusing on it. But it is not evident during the actual game because it is concentrating on the game. And just like with the Wii, you quickly learn to compensate for that fraction of a second apart. It ‘an absolute non-issue !!!!!

All-in-all, after playing three games (Kinect Adventures Kinect Sports and Your Shape) in a couple of hours, his girlfriend and I were exhausted, exhillarated, and amazed by the experience. My girlfriend, being a typical girl, whose life is not defined by gadgets, also posted on the FB Kinect really is amazing! It ‘s more than exceeded our expectations and I could not be happier with the purchase. And I’m absolutely thrilled to Kinect what it means for the future of gaming. Fully immersive Call of Duty? Yes, it’s coming!

Great work Microsoft! You should be proud of yourselves!

First of all, I have a hard and fast rule – never buy the first generation of equipment, especially from Microsoft, especially when it is new technology. However, the rules are made to be broken, right? :)

my boyfriend birthday is today, and he really wanted the Kinect for his birthday – was a sign that was released the day before her birthday, right? :) So, like a good girl (and fellow gadget junkie), I ordered from Amazon for him and waiting for us yesterday when we got home from work. Props to Amazon for delivering flawless release date!

Set it up before I got home and reported that the installation was very simple. What took longer was re-set the furniture and understand the best place to put the sensor. We have the 360S, so that the device is plug and play.

We tested the Sport Kinect Form and your games, we also have the adventure game that came with, and I’m going to get the game Dance Central as well.

So far we are very pleased with how the unit works. We definitely want a little ‘getting used to, but this is the case with any new technology. I know there are opinions on how this is not good for the hardcore game – and for us is good. It ‘s a player (MW2, BlackOps excited), but if you intend to play those games going to use the controller. I’m not a big fan of responsible gaming, I’m a fan of Rock Band – a lot happier with a microphone:)

We bought the Kinect so you can burn some energy and not be such couch potatoes. The shape-up program is really great so far, but I suppose I should take my review for that in addition to the game.

The litmus test for the unit will be tomorrow – birthday party for her boyfriend and we’re going to have a group of friends to play with the Kinect. Kinect Sports has a party atmosphere that should be perfect, but with that many people in the room and players of various sizes and shapes, I’ll be very curious to see how it goes.

To sum up -
Pros: Easy to set up, the recognition is cool, actually burning calories while you play, you may get more in shape with a video game (the personal trainer feedback so far is really cool), the party fun toy, the voice of the navigation group Xbox

Cons: Had to re-arrange the living room, and in a small apartment is kind of hard to do. Only two players at a time. Interface takes some ‘getting used to.

So all in all, I am very happy with the purchase and can not wait to see what other interesting things it can do. I can not wait for the video chat aspect. I’m also looking to the future of gaming. Using the unit last night I really could not help but think that this is really changing the landscape of video game play.

————————————————– ———————-

A post-party Kinect update:

The unit has worked flawlessly. The space was a bit ‘tight, but this is a function of the small house and friends in height. Everyone had a blast and watching or playing games. Most popular were the games where you could challenge someone else. The interplay of dance and sport Station (Yeah! Dance Battle!) Were the most popular for this. The unit worked perfectly, as great to work with different people play the game – 17 of us have tried many different games at different times and it worked without a hitch. All the party was jealous of our toy and other leftists are trying to figure out how to rearrange their home so you can get one too!

Oh, and we tested the functionality of Xbox Live with ping pong, boxing and parts of Kinect Sport and were pleasantly surprised by how well it worked. Very little lag and very responsive.

They’ve spent an hour or so yesterday, the training mode of Dance Central and boy, I tell you what I’ve certainly had a good workout. The boyfriend did workouts with your game shape and is also quite happy.

Love it love it love it love it….
