Question by Sam: How can I hook up my laptop to my television using s video cable?
I have a laptop with a 7pin s-video output and a tv with a 4 pin s-video input. I have bought a standard 4m s-video cable from my local store to connect the two. I have connected the cables and my laptop seems to recognize the tv, as when Fn+F8 is pressed, there is an option to switch to TV mode or LCD mode, or both, whereas there was only one option before.
However, on my Samsung rear-projection television, I can’t find the channel that the laptop is at. Even when I switched to TV only output, there is no channel that recognises the laptop.
How can I get my Samsung rear projection to recognise my laptop and what channel will it be on? It is not on the AV “blue” screen channels as I have checked.
Help please as I really need this function.

Answer by jjki_11738 On your TV, you’re looking for a setting like, video 1 or video 2; or AV1 or AV2 Etc.-check the marking next to the S connector input on your TV. By the way, the S cable only carries the video. You still have to bring over the audio. Your TV probably has red and white RCA sockets. Your computer probably has a small stereo connetor. You can buy a stereo to RCA adapter and a standard red/white audio cable to do the hook-up. Radio Shack should have what you need.

I am considering buying a new laptop with a TV tuner card which will allow me to connect my Playstation 3 to it and use the monitor as a TV.
What will actually be connected to my laptop (cable wise)? From my understanding, all I need is the HDMI cable from my PS3 to the laptop and it will provide the sound and video. I am probably wrong though.

Answer by rafa tv tuner need window for working, you can’t use it like regular monitor. you are going to use regular video input. some laptob come with HDMI output(to conect it with a tv), i don’t think laptops came with HDMI input now

I have had my laptop for a year give or take a few days (early xmas present) and keep getting reminders on my screen that the battery is ending its life??? Surely this is not normal? Do batteries have warranties?

Answer by Andrew A The battery charger lasts forever (or at least longer than the useful life of the laptop).
The battery pack itself does have a limited life. Typically this is about 200 full charge cycles if the battery is looked after.
This is normal and unavoidable, no rechargeable battery will last forever. That said a year is a fairly short time for it to last unless it has had some very heavy use.
Warranties wouldn’t help you here, they don’t cover normal wear which is what the manufacturer would claim this was.
A battery is considered to be at the end of it’s life when it will only hold between 80 and 90% of it’s new charge.
The battery reaching the end of it’s life doesn’t mean it won’t work at all, just that it won’t work for as long. I have seen very old laptops where the battery will only keep the computer running for about 5 minutes.
For future reference, high temperatures, especially when fully charged, are harmful for the battery and will make it age quicker. About the worst thing you can do to a laptop battery is leave it in the computer while the computer is plugged into the wall and doing a lot of work for a long time (e.g. playing a game). If your computer spends most of the time plugged in then pull the battery out until you need to move it next.
Ideally you should store the battery about 40% charged when not in use but that can be a little impractical since you then need to charge it before use. Storing it fully charged is worse but more practical and not too bad for it as long as you keep it somewhere cool.
